An artificial Christmas tree is an investment in your family’s holiday memories for years to come. To retain the beauty of your Balsam Hill™ tree and prevent damage during storage, it is essential to know how to store a Christmas tree properly. All the tree sections must be stored properly and kept out of the way in a cool, dry place.
Every Balsam Hill tree comes with a free storage bag made from rip-stop nylon with reinforced handles for easy handling. We recommend using these bags to keep your tree in great condition. We also offer large, wheeled tree storage bags for even more convenience. Keep reading for our guide to storing your Christmas tree after the holidays.
Note: Damage caused by improper storage conditions, such as excessive heat or humidity, is not covered by the warranty of your tree.
Storage Tips
Here are some tips and best practices to remember as you take down your Christmas tree.
- Remove all decorations from your tree and unplug the lights from the wall before disassembly.
- To minimize heavy lifting, consider moving the storage bag and tree sections to your final storage location before packing them.
- Compress each tree section to fit more easily into your storage container.
- Store your tree in a cool, dry location to prevent it from acquiring a musty odor while in storage. As a precaution, you can try storing the tree with a packet of baking soda or unused coffee grounds.
Storing a Traditional Artificial Christmas Tree
For regular unlit or pre-lit Balsam Hill trees, follow this guide.
How to Disassemble Your Tree
- Detach the lights – For non-Easy Plug™ trees, detach the light connections between the sections. If your tree is not pre-lit, unstring the lights and store them separately.
- Compress the branches – Use both hands to compress the foliage on each branch before detaching the section. Then, flip the tree section over and squeeze the branches together.
- Secure with ribbon —To make handling easier, tie a ribbon or cord around the section to secure the branches.
How to Store Tree Sections
- Prepare the storage bag(s) – Unzip and open the storage bags that came with your tree.
- Store the sections – Position the sections in the bag(s) as if they were a pair of shoes in a box, with the pole in the center. For larger trees, place the odd-numbered sections in one bag, and the even-numbered in the other.
- Seal the bag – Zip up the bag to keep out dust and insects.
Storing a Flip Tree
Balsam Hill offers a quick and convenient way to pack and unpack a Christmas tree with its new Flip Tree™ technology. With a built-in rolling stand, it can be taken in and out of storage more conveniently than ever before.
How to Store Your Flip Tree™
- Detach Upper Section – Detach the upper section, turn it over, and compress it. Store this section in the provided storage bag.
- Flip the Bottom – Flip the bottom tree section over. Compress as needed to cover with the storage bag.
- Roll it Away – Unlock the wheels and roll it over to your storage space.
