Setting up an artificial Christmas tree every year can be daunting, especially for those who find attaching parts, string lights, and shape branches challenging. With a Balsam Hill Flip Tree, the setup process becomes nearly effortless, allowing you to skip the hassle and dive straight into the joy of decorating and celebrating with your loved ones.
What Is a Flip Tree?
The Balsam Hill Flip Tree is an expertly designed tree that’s easy to move, assemble, and store. Inventor Bruce Schooley created the “flip” concept to address the size and weight of artificial Christmas trees with heavier, more lifelike branches. Its patented structure streamlines tree parts and eliminates heavy lifting.
Balsam Hill Flip Tree vs Regular Tree
Unlike regular artificial Christmas trees, the Flip Tree has a patented design that allows you to set it up and take it down within minutes. With this innovative technology, you can simply flip the base and attach the treetop.
How Does the Balsam Hill Flip Tree Work?
A Flip Tree has two main parts: the base and the treetop. It’s an easy set-up Christmas tree that flips into display position in seconds. It also includes a rolling metal stand for hassle-free transportation from room to room. The wheels feature 360-degree rotation for smooth steering and locking pedals for stability.
Every Balsam Hill Flip Tree includes the following:
- Rolling metal stand with lockable 360-degree wheels
- Easy Plug® technology so you can light up your tree with a single plug
- Premium heavy-duty storage bags
- Protective gloves for shaping
- Extra bulbs and fuses (for pre-lit trees)
Flip Trees With Easy Plug Technology
All pre-lit Balsam Hill Flip Trees come with our patented Easy Plug technology for even quicker assembly. The light strings are pre-connected throughout the trunk, so lighting your tree only requires a single plug. This way, you don’t have to connect several light strands from end to end.
How Do You Set up a Balsam Hill Flip Tree?
Assemble Your Tree
Follow the steps below to achieve a picture-perfect display:
Step 1: Wheel To Display Area
Roll the tree’s bottom section from the shipping box to your chosen location, then remove the storage bag.
Step 2: Lock the Wheels
Step down on the locking feature of each wheel to secure the stand.
Step 3: Flip the Tree Base
Press the foot pedal on the same side as the stand bar to unlock the base. While pressing the pedal, flip the tree base towards you until it locks into place.
Step 4: Attach the Tree Top
Take the tree’s top section out of its storage bag, then insert it into the pole of the base. If you have a tall tree, its top may come in two parts. For pre-lit models, ensure the central pole plugs are aligned when attaching the treetop to connect the light strings properly.
Tips for Seamless Assembly
- Clear the flip path by pushing the branches to the left or right of the tree trunk. This will prevent limbs from catching on the pole.
- If your assembled tree looks crooked, check if the floor is level and all four wheels are on an even surface. Make sure there is no limb caught between the flip pole and the tree pole.
- If your pre-lit tree doesn’t light up, check our Troubleshooting Guide to help fix potential issues.
How To Shape the Branches
Balsam Hill trees are compressed for shipping and require shaping to achieve a full look. Follow the steps below or read our guide to shaping your tree for more detailed instructions.
Step 1: Use Safety Gloves
Protect your hands with the gloves provided in the welcome kit.
Step 2: Pull the Branch Tips Upwards and Outwards
Start by shaping the inner tips of each branch. This will help hide the trunk and make the tree look full. Angle any side branches out and away from the main branch.
Step 3: Step Back and Survey the Tree
Check the tree for any gaps that may require more fluffing. Pay special attention to the parts where tree sections come together.
Tips for Expert Fluffing
- When fluffing a pre-lit model, switch the Christmas tree lights on to ensure they work correctly.
- To recreate the look of “downswept” or “upswept” branches, exert pressure on the main branch to bend it up or down.
- Refer to photos of your tree model on Balsam Hill’s website to guide you while fluffing.
How Do You Take Down a Balsam Hill Flip Tree?
A Flip Tree is an easy Christmas tree to set up and store. Here are the steps to take down your tree and preserve its beauty for seasons to come:
Step 1: Remove Decorations
Unplug your pre-lit tree and remove all decorations.
Step 2: Disassemble Tree Parts
Detach the top section and place it in the treetop bag. Arrange the treetop so that the clear plastic lining protects its pole.
Step 3: Unlock the Tree
Press the foot pedal on the side of the stand to unlock your tree. Flip the tree base toward you until it automatically locks into storage mode.
Step 4: Place Tree Base Into Storage Bag
Pull the storage bag over the tree base, positioning the zippered opening directly over the bar of the stand. The tree base pole should go through the hole at the top of the bag. Close the bag and buckle straps to secure it.
Step 5: Wheel Into Storage
Unlock the wheels and roll your tree into storage. Choose a cool, dry space to prevent damage during the off-season.

How Does a Folding Christmas Tree Differ From a Flip Christmas Tree?
A foldable Christmas tree has branches that fold up against its central trunk for streamlined storage and typically requires manual adjustment during setup. Balsam Hill’s Flip Tree consists of two main sections, with the tree base flipping into place, simplifying the setup process. While both designs aim to ease setup and storage, they differ in their mechanisms, with the Flip Tree focusing on reducing assembly steps and the folding tree emphasizing compact storage.
How Does the Setup Process of Balsam Hill’s Flip Tree Compare to Christmas Trees With Automatic Setup?
Balsam Hill’s Flip Tree simplifies setup by allowing users to manually flip the tree into place with two main sections. In contrast, an automatic Christmas tree may use motors to deploy branches or lights without manual intervention. While the Flip Tree emphasizes easy assembly, automatic trees offer a more hands-free approach.
How Does a Retractable Christmas Tree Compare to a Flip Tree?
Much like a telescope, a retractable Christmas tree is designed to expand and retract, making setup and storage more streamlined. Balsam Hill’s Flip Tree consists of two main sections, with the tree base flipping into place for setup. While both offer convenience, the retractable tree emphasizes a seamless transition between storage and full display, while the Flip Tree focuses on easy assembly with fewer steps.
Is It Easier To Set up a Collapsible Christmas Tree or a Balsam Hill Flip Tree?
Both tree designs are crafted for user convenience but address different pain points. The Balsam Hill Flip Tree is designed to reduce the number of assembly steps, making the setup process faster and more straightforward. Users simply flip the main tree section into place. With their vertical compression mechanism, collapsible trees might require more fluffing and arranging of branches after setup, but they offer the advantage of a swift breakdown and compact storage.
What Is the Easiest Christmas Tree To Set Up?
Several Christmas trees are designed for easy setup, including Balsam Hill’s Flip Tree, which simplifies assembly with its flipping mechanism, retractable trees that expand and retract for quick setup, hinged branch trees with foldable branches, and pop-up Christmas trees that spring into shape. Pre-lit trees with attached lights further ease the setup process by eliminating the need to string lights. The ideal choice depends on individual preferences, space, and budget.
